How to make Slugterra's Eli Shane from Fondant and How to make Slugterra Slugs from Fondant

It was my son's 9th Birthday on Saturday and I could not resist giving you all a sneak peek of the Fondant Eli Shane figurine and the Fondant Slugterra Slugs Burpy, Joules and Doc that I made for his cake.

Making figurines and fondant details for cakes are my favourite part of cake making that is why I decided to share them first. I will share the whole Slugterra Cake with Fondant Eli Shane and Slugs with you in my next post...but beware the cake has a twist (my son has a wonderful imagination). Keep checking back.

I believe this is the first totally edible Eli Shane that you will find on the Internet. Unfortunately I did not take photos as I was making him, so there is no step for step photo tutorial on how to make a fondant Eli Shane and his slugs, but I will explain how I made them. I hope it will help some mommy or cake decorator out there and give you some inspiration and ideas.

Here they are---->
What do you think of them?
My son and his friends all loved them and could not tell some of them apart from the real toys @mymissionaccomplished

HOW TO MAKE ELI SHANE OUT OF FONDANT

You will need:

  • Fondant or sugar paste in the following colours: Flesh tone, black, light blue, grey, white and orange. You can buy pre coloured fondant or colour your own. If you are using fondant, I usually add some CMC powder in the fondant to make it dry harder.
  • Fondant Tools
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Edible glue
  • Edible markers

How to make Eli Shane from Fondant:

Form his head out of skin tone fondant. I modelled his head around a lollipop stick. The lollipop stick helps for structure and to anchor him onto the cake.
Make hollows for his eyes with your tools and form a nose. Now make his eyes with the light blue fondant and some white. Stick to head with edible glue.

TIP: Keep a picture of Eli Shane handy that you can use as a guide.

I made a slit for his mouth opening and added some teeth (white fondant).
Add some eye brows in black.

Let the head dry. This does not take long if you use sugar paste or fondant with CMC or Tylose powder in it. I would say leave it about 30 minutes.

Then you can add some hair. I made my hair black. Stick with edible glue.

You can now add some detail to the eyes and around they eyes with edible markers. Look at your picture reference and see what you want to do.

I then formed his shirt out of black fondant and added all the details in grey and orange. I made his Slug Slinger with light blue, black and orange star. I stuck it to his body with edible glue.
Make his black sleeves and add some arms from flesh tone fondant. Let dry.
Attach arms to body with edible glue. You can put a toothpick in if you feel your arms need more support. Please remember to tell the people who will eat the cake that you did that!
Add some details on shoulders.

For his legs I mixed some blue, grey and black fondant to make denim colour. I think I could have made it even more blue, but I liked it darker. I put the legs in a crouching position and let it dry like that. Once dry I added some shoes. I know Eli Shane wears boots, but honestly I thought the shoes looked better for the position he was in. The boots made him look like he had no legs at all!

Once the legs and shoes were dry I attached his bottom half to the top half. I kept the lollipop stick a bit longer so it can stick into the cake for support and to keep him up.

To finish him off I made his blaster. I could have made it bigger...Maybe next time!

And that is  How you make Eli Shane from fondant!

First Birthday Book Cake - Monster Cake

I wanted to share with you the cute Monster Cake I made for my baby boy's First Birthday! I decided on a Monster Theme for his First Birthday Party and had to come up with a cake that fits into the Monster theme, but also something that suits him and his personality.

I just love my baby boy he is such an adorable little Monster. The cute fluffy kind of course! He is such a bundle of energy and it is hard to keep up with him sometimes, but when he keeps still for a few minutes he loves his cuddles and hugs. He is just a loving, happy, laughing bundle of joy!
He loves books and he is very intelligent. Keeping all of this in mind, I came up with a great idea for his cake.

I decided to make an Open Book Monster Cake but with a little story in it. The story of his First Birthday. The story is about a little Monster's First Birthday and this little cheeky Monster who tried to steel the Birthday cake! Well there is more, there is another little Monster hiding inside the cake and he is also trying to get his hands on the cake!
I also added some other fun little elements. I made his name into six different little Monsters, a different Monster for each letter. All the kids at the party loved that!

I also added an extra surprise to the cake...

Once the cake was cut everyone saw the surprise...pictures inside the cake. Every slice had the same pictures. I just loved adding pictures inside my cake. I learned How to add pictures inside my cakes from a tutorial I bought. I added stars and half moons!

I loved making his cake because it was totally mine. My design, my ideas and my creativity. I did not have to search the net for hours for ideas, I  did not have to make something that has been made a million times before, I just used all the ideas I had in my head and made it my own. My baby loved his cake and so did everyone at his party. What a special, precious day it was!

It was a Happy First Birthday with my little Monster!

How to dry Fondant or Sugarpaste figures and toppers faster!

I recently got the opportunity to make an Under the Sea cake for a little girl who turned 5.
I knew it was going to be a challenge to make but who am I to say no to a challenge? It was February and it is stinking hot on the island in February. We call it suicide month!
All I could think of was that I would have to make a ton of fondant and gumpaste toppers and how on earth will they all dry in this heat and humidity!

I had a week to make the Mermaid topper and all the other gumpaste decorations. Luckilly they all hardened in time and I found a great trick on how to dry them faster! It worked!! What is my tip I hear you ask? It is simple really...

How to dry Fondant or Sugarpaste figures or topper faster?

Use a hair dryer! Yes I know it sounds a bit strange, but it really works. Put the hair dryer on the lowest heat setting. Hold it about (30cm) 12 inches away from the figurine that you are drying and moving the hair dryer side to side over the figure. I do it for 3 minutes and then let it rest for 3 minutes, I do it about 3 times and it will dry nicely!

Here is the finished cake, I think it turned out pretty well. What do you think?

I will do another post on How to make a fondant Mermaid topper and other sea creatures.

Till then make, eat and love what you do!

White Chocolate and Roses 30th Birthday Cake

Ask any woman what they love and they will say...chocolate! Now add some flowers to that chocolate and you have one happy woman! (take note men) hehe.. with this in mind I decided to make my lovely neighbour a 30th Birthday cake to remember.

I decided to make her a Vanilla Cake with chocolate ganache filling, vanilla buttercream icing, white chocolate sleeve around it and pretty sugarpaste roses.

I used my delicious and trusty Vanilla Cake recipe. Get recipe here (link coming soon)

The bottom tier is two layers of vanilla cake and the top tier is one layer. I filled the layers with white chocolate ganache. Get recipe here (link coming soon)

I then frosted the whole cake with vanilla buttercream icing.

I made a white chocolate sleeve that I wrapped around the two tiers and decorated with sugarpaste roses that I handmade.

I also made a number 30 out of green sugarpaste and decorated with pink flowers. I thought this was a nice touch.

A cake pretty enough to eat!

Noddy Car Birthday Cake

My neighbour (Mimi)'s baby recently turned 2 and she asked me to help her make him a cute Noddy cake. They are French and the little guy just loves Noddy (Noddy in French is called Oui-Oui, pronounced wee-wee). Together we decided to make him a Noddy Car with a fondant Noddy inside the Car.
He was VERY happy with his Oui-Oui!

I gave Mimi the job to bake the cake. She used a Vanilla Cake Recipe for the cake and baked it in a standard bread pan, which she let cool for a few hours. The cake needs to be completely cooled and firm before cutting and decorating.

To decorate the Car and make Noddy you will need:

Yellow Butter Icing
Yellow fondant
Blue fondant
Grey fondant
Red fondant
Light Pink (or flesh coloured) fondant
White fondant
Black fondant
Shredded Coconut
Green Edible Food Spray
Brown Royal Icing
Piping bag
Edible glue
Black edible marker pen

HOW TO MAKE A NODDY CAR

After the cake has cooled down, carve the cake into a car shape and cover it in Butter Icing. The Butter Icing helps to keep the crumbs in control and will help the fondant stick to the cake. I coloured the Butter Icing the same yellow as the fondant.

Cover the car with the yellow fondant, take care not to let the fondant tear. Make an arch for the windscreen from the yellow fondant and let it dry completely before you stick it to the front of the car with edible glue. Form wheels (with circular cutter), grill, bumper, head lights, steering wheel and interior of car out of grey fondant. Stick to car with edible glue. I then put the Birthday boy's name on the back of the car in blue fondant letters. You can also create a little licence plate if you wish ;) I also added a blue fondant 2 to the front of the car.

HOW TO MAKE NODDY FROM FONDANT

Make Noddy's head from light pink or flesh coloured fondant. Red for his mouth and white, blue and black for his eyes. Make his hat from blue fondant and put a little yellow ball on top. I added some hair with brown Royal Icing (with the piping bag)

Noddy's body is made from red fondant. You only need to make his top part as he will be sitting in the car. His hands are made from the light pink or flesh coloured fondant. I made his neck tie from yellow fondant which I added red dots (fondant) to. You can use small, thin dowel sticks or even a kebab scewer to secure his body into his car.

EXTRA DETAILS

Mimi tried her hand at fondant work and made some cute mushrooms, bees and flowers. Flowers were made using a flower cutter. You will need red and white fondant for the mushrooms, yellow and white for the bees (striped made using a black edible marker) and blue, red, yellow and white for the flowers. Have fun here and be creative.

I made the grass by placing some scredded coconut into a bag and spraying it with the green edible food spray, then shaking it up untill all the coconut is covered in green. It dries instantly!
Place green grass on a tray or cake plate, put Noddy Car with your fondant Noddy inside on top of the grass and decorate with mushrooms, flowers and bees.

I also made the birthday boy's name out of red and blue fondant and placed it on the grass with the nr 2. I think the freeform letters looked really good with the other details.

HOW TO MAKE NODDY CUPCAKES

We also made and decorated a few cupcakes. I made some Noddy faces with fondant and placed them on top of the iced cupcakes that my neighbour made. I think they came out very cute!

Despite the terrible heat we had to work in (and trust me heat and fondant don't go together) and me being 8 months pregnant, we had LOADS of fun creating this cake and I think Noddy and his Car came out really well. In the excitement to finish the cake we forgot about the red wheel bumper covers, but what the heck, I still think it looked great and little Lukas loved his cake!

80's Theme Birthday Cake

A friend of mine recently had a 80's inspired Birthday Party and I offered to bake her a cake for the occassion. Thinking of the 80's, who can still remember Pac Man, the Rubbiks Cube, AirWolf, A-Team and Who's the Boss? And don't forget all the music that made the 80's what it was, Cindi Lauper, Men at Work, Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, AHA, The Cure, Depeche Mode and Queen just to name a few.

I wanted to bake a cake for her that  incorporated all the things we liked about the 80's and this is what I came up with...

I made a hip teenager that is chilling on her bed with a Vogue and her favourite Music Tapes and Walkman at hand (and her Rubbiks Cube of course!) Everything but the doll is edible.

80's INSPIRED BIRTHDAY CAKE

Vanilla Sponge Cake

2 1/2 cups (625ml) Self Raising Flour
2 cups (500ml) Sugar
4 large Eggs
1 cup (250ml) Milk
1/4 cup (65ml) Vegetable Oil
1 tsp (5ml) Vanilla Essence

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celcius.
Mix the eggs and sugar together till thick.
Add the flour, milk, oil and vanilla
Beat till smooth and creamy

I used a square cake tin 20cm x 20cm for the bed

Bake for 30-40 mins. It is done when a test pin comes out clean.

LET THE CAKE COOL COMPLETELY

Decorate

500g Butter Icing
250g Royal Icing
Edible Glue
1 kg Ready to Roll Fondant - white
Ball of Sugar Paste - about the size of your fist
Gel Colours - Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Black
Edible Food Markers - Red, Blue and Black
Chocolate sticks (Sticko) or round wavers

The day before

Colour a small piece of the Sugar Paste light yellow and make some flowers out of the sugar paste and let them dry, also colour a small piece of Sugar Paste bright yellow and cut out a circle (for PacMan) and lettering for Happy Birthday.

Colour a small piece of sugar paste red, orange, blue, yellow, green, black and grey. Cut into small blocks for your Rubbiks cube. Use black fondant to make some Tapes. Grey for Walkman and airphones and blue for magazine cover. Write in your magazine with edible markers, also make stickers for your tapes and write on it with edible marker. If you need to fill in the spaces of the Rubbiks Cube use a black edible marker.

Fondant Tapes
Fondant Walkman

Fondant Rubbiks Cube
Fondant Magazine

On the day

Bake the cake.

Colour most of the Ready to roll Fondant purple (blue mixed with a little red), the remaining piece I coloured light yellow.

Bed
To make the bed, I cut off a 5cm (2 inch) piece of cake from the side of the Sponge Cake. This I used for the pillows.
I then covered the whole cake with Butter Icing.
Next I rolled out the purple fondant to fit the size of the cake. Carefully place the fondant over the cake, smooting it as you go to get rid of any air bubbles. Only smooth the fondant out over the top of the bed, let it fall naturally towards the bottom - this creates the effect of a duvet.
I cut the piece of cake I took from the top into two equal pieces and cover them with purple fondant. This is your pillows. I used a crimper tool to do the edges of the pillow and to seal the fondant.

Headboard
Then take your chocolate sticks or wafers and attatch them to the top of the bed with some royal icing. This is your headboard. Once the headboard is dry you can pop the pillows onto the bed.

Fondant Doll's clothes
The top and pants for the doll is made from sugar paste that is coloured bright yellow. Cut two flower shapes out of the sugar paste that is big enough to cover her breasts. Attach to the doll with edible glue and another piece of white sugar paste on her back for the strap. Make a hot pants out of the rest of the bright yellow sugar paste and attach with some edible glue.

Once the doll's clothers is completely dry, you can position her on the bed. You might want to stick her to the bed with some royal icing - just to make sure she does not move around.

Fondant Blanket/Throw
Use the rest of the purple fondant to make her a little blanket that she can throw over her legs. Crimp the edges with the crimping tool. Stick some of the flowers you made all over the throw and on the pillows (use edible glue).

Fondant Frill
Use the light yellow piece of fondant that you kept asside. Emboss with a nice patern. Attach to the end of the duvet - as a pretty frill. Attach with edible glue.

Now all you need to do is add the accessories - Walkman, Tapes, Rubbiks cube and Vogue and the PacMan and Birthday lettering and voila!

Be creative and have fun!
